It's New Year! Tong Tong &#38; Xiao Xiao's Chinese New Year Handbook
Publisher Tan Sheau Yun's deep interest in Chinese culture and her talent for marrying the old with the new brought about this collaborative effort between an educator, designer and illustrator to produce the first of a planned series of children's books.

Their objective is to create interests and awareness amongst children of their rich Chinese cultural heritage through the celebration of Chinese festivals.

The first book is entitled "过年咯！彤彤与小小的过年手册 (It's New Year! Tong Tong &#38; Xiao Xiao's Chinese New Year Handbook)". The story unfolds as the protagonists, 10-year-old Tong Tong and Xiao Xiao, prepare for Chinese New Year, right up to the 15th day of the first lunar month. Through the process children will learn about lesser known myths and folklore related to Chinese New Year, its origins, customs, practices, dos' and don'ts. Children will also get to explore and express themselves with games and activities interspersed in the book.

Author Chua Joo Suan is a passionate educator and her unflinching mission is to bridge the gap of cultural education amongst the young.

Designer Koo Chee Kin is a multi-talented freelancer who has written and styled for major magazines. His creative skills extend to his passion for food and travel.

Illustrator Kuan Teck Harn is an accomplished artist in the advertising and design industries. His whimsical style gave life to this project.

This publication is supported under the National Heritage Board's Heritage Industry Incentive Programme (Hi2P).

This book is available at Tong Tong Friendship Store, 100 Beach Road, #01-04/05 Shaw Towers (Tel: 6396 3887) and other good book stores.

Most of us associate red packets with the Chinese New Year. It is in fact a versatile form of gift-giving suitable for many festive occasions and milestones in life:
• When we are born, our parents are given red packets to wish us good health.
• When we get married, we take pleasure in counting the red packets (and well wishes, of course) received from guests at our wedding banquet.
• After we get married, it becomes our turn to give red packets to unmarried family and friends during Chinese New Year.
• And as we reach old age, we look forward to red packets from our children wishing us good health (again) and longevity on our birthdays.

If you’re ever unsure of what to give on other important occasions (house warming? undertaking a voyage?), the red packet is usually a welcome and safe bet.

Have fun with your red packets! &#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/11.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/11_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/22.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/22_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/33.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/33_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; &#60;img src="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/44.jpg" border="0" width="670" height="502" width_o="800" height_o="600" src_o="http://payload5.cargocollective.com/1/0/17380/2416853/44_o.jpg" align="left" /&#62; </description>

Throughout South East Asia since the end of the XXth century, artists have been rediscovering their roots and traditional crafts, by reinterpreting their mixed and painful pasts.

They have grown out of State-condoned folk-art and tourist-priced exoticism, and back from the counter-culture distraction of self-denying, copycat Western conceptualism. Entrenched in soul-searching identity crisis, pioneers, pillars and heralds of the local scenes have dug up their forefathers’ hand-woven, paper-cut, hand-dyed, studded, pierced, cursed and blessed techniques, which contemporary art used to look down upon as arts and crafts.

Asia is reborn of gift-shop mentalities and ridding of self-loathe, cultivating local flavours and tastes for indigenous tribal aesthetics, from ancient script and tattoos, to music, graphic design, fashion and contemporary art. Crews of grunge-skater-nerd, ghetto-punk and retro-rockabilly artists are digging back into their drawers and closets. Their art is profoundly idiosyncratic, raw in discourse, sophisticated in delivery.

It is expressionist figurative, from mutant tribalism from Taiwan and the Philippines, to street animism and folk esoterism from Indonesia, brand-new retro pop from Singapore, and graffiti opera from Hong Kong.

This is Neo Folk.

Syan aka MC Yan (Graffiti art - Hong Kong), Kuanth (Graphics and installation art - Singapore/Malaysia), Samuel Indratma (Painter, sculptor - Yogjakarta), Darbotz (Graffiti artist - Jakarta), Jam Wu 吳耿禎 (Poet, photographer, paper-cut artist - Taipei), I Made Palguna (Painter - Yogjakarta), Sokkuan (Illustrations, installations - Singapore/Malaysia), redslim08 (Visual artist - Philippines).

杜十娘 Du ShiNiang (Lady No.10)
Origin:
XinHua puppet show originated from Fu Jian province of China. It was very popular in Singapore from 1930s to 1970s before television became a household norm. The performance usually takes place when there's a festive celebration or devotion ceremony to the gods.

Concept:
Today, this art form is slowly but surely dying. To pay tribute to this unique performing art and hopefully generate / rekindle some interests among modern audience, I endeavor to breathe new life to it by reinterpreting one of the most loved stories of the puppet show and by presenting it in a contemporary form.

Story:
The chosen story, Du ShiNiang, is among the few popular scripts that passes on from generation to generation since the Ming Dynasty. The story reflects a theme used by Chinese romantic authors for centuries— the self-sacrificing love of a woman for a man whose family and position from which she must be excluded. I envision the protagonist, Du ShiNiang's attitude towards the situation where she's made to choose to sacrifice for love or money (in the original script, she killed herself by jumping into a river when she found out she was sold by her lover to another man).

Special thanks to WenBin Lim, Professor Yeo.SH, Plixio for the helps on the mechanism and production. Thanks SK for the photography. Thanks JM, CK for the ideas and thanks Sin for everything.:)

Zouk X Dr. Martens Collaboration 10/2011
This October, Singapore’s nightlife Mecca Zouk has tied up exclusively with Dr. Martens to present a unique collection of the latter’s iconic1461 3-Eye shoe specially designed by 20 of the scene’s players,
trailblazers, creatives &#38; thinkers alike in celebration of Zouk’s 20... glorious years of music, dance and culture and Dr. Martens’ #FIRST 1461 3-Eye Shoe Customization in Singapore.

In this union of two world-class lifestyle brands brought together through their mutual love for style, opening minds and pushing boundaries, each personality was given a pair of limited edition Dr.Martens 1461 3-Eye shoe - with their signature stitching in green instead of the iconic yellow - on which they can express their feelings toward the internationally-renowned club, incorporating the Zouk identity on their blank canvases with artistic freedom &#38; creative liberation, thereby adding a quaint and personal touch to each design.

The footwear, together with photos shot by acclaimed photographer Ivanho Harlim, will then be exhibited in Zouk, a mini art gallery in itself on 7 October 2011 and will be auctioned off post-event from 8 to 25 October 2011, with all proceeds going to Zouk’s adopted charity for 2011: Make-A-Wish Foundation®.
