It was very popular in Singapore from 1930s to 1970s before television became a household norm. The performance usually takes place when there's a festive celebration or devotion ceremony to the gods. Concept: Today, this art form is slowly but surely dying. To pay tribute to this unique performing art and hopefully generate / rekindle some interests among modern audience, I endeavor to breathe new life to it by reinterpreting one of the most loved stories of the puppet show and by presenting it in a contemporary form. Story: The chosen story, Du ShiNiang, is among the few popular scripts that passes on from generation to generation since the Ming Dynasty. The story reflects a theme used by Chinese romantic authors for centuries— the self-sacrificing love of a woman for a man whose family and position from which she must be excluded. I envision the protagonist, Du ShiNiang's attitude towards the situation where she's made to choose to sacrifice for love or money (in the original script, she killed herself by jumping into a river when she found out she was sold by her lover to another man).
